From the textile industry in the 19th century to the music and football scene in the late 1980s, Manchester has always been a driving force. It was inevitable that these three aspects would eventually intertwine. In 1988, Manchester became known as Madchester with the emergence of Acid House music, and people started dressing in Baggys.

People from all walks of life, such as ravers, indie kids, and football fans, came together at clubs and gigs. Bagging clothing allowed for the freedom of movement on the dance floor. Both girls and boys often wore similar clothing, creating a seemingly egalitarian and non-gendered look.

The Madchester/Baggy look represented a confident Northern identity with roots in earlier working-class street styles that were distinct to the North West football crowds but also part of the wider Casual subculture. The fashion seen during matchdays was as common at Stone Roses shows as it was in football stadiums. Sportswear began to blend with the baggy styles of music fans.
